Who can shop

Age, Identification, and Nonresident Access

Adult-use cannabis is available to people 21 and older who can prove their age with valid identification. Colorado residency is not required: the state removed the former purchase-limit difference between residents and nonresidents, and its identification rules recognize qualifying documents issued outside Colorado.

Bring a valid, unexpired photo ID. Qualifying documents can include a driver's license or state identification card, a passport or passport card, certain U.S. military or government identification, or qualifying tribal identification. A photo or photocopy may not satisfy the store's verification duties, so bring the original document.

Visitors shopping adult-use inventory do not need a Colorado medical marijuana card. Medical shopping is a separate path with its own patient documentation requirements.

Know the difference

Purchase Limits and Possession Limits

A licensed Colorado retail store may sell no more than one ounce of flower or its equivalent in a single transaction. Retail concentrate is also capped at eight grams per person per day. If you combine flower, concentrates, edibles, or other regulated products, the point-of-sale system applies Colorado's equivalency calculation to the full basket.

The retail purchase limit is not the same as the general possession limit. Current Colorado Department of Transportation guidance states that adults 21 and older may possess up to two ounces. Stay within both the sales rules and the possession limit; a legal purchase does not authorize public use or interstate transport.

Where Cannabis Consumption Is—and Is Not—Allowed

Colorado prohibits open and public cannabis consumption in every form, including smoking, vaping, and eating an infused product. Sidewalks, parks, restaurants, bars, concert venues, ski areas, and shared areas of hotels or apartment buildings are examples of places where public consumption is not allowed.

Private-property owners may set stricter rules. A hotel, vacation rental, campground, event venue, or employer can prohibit possession or consumption on its property, so obtain clear permission before using cannabis. Colorado Springs also prohibits marijuana hospitality and hospitality-and-sales businesses; do not plan to consume at the dispensary.

Plan a sober ride

Driving and Transporting Cannabis in Colorado

Do not drive after consuming cannabis. Colorado can charge a driver with DUI or DWAI based on observed impairment, even below five nanograms of active delta-9 THC per milliliter of whole blood. The five-nanogram standard is a permissible inference, not a safe-to-drive threshold.

Neither drivers nor passengers may open cannabis packaging or use cannabis in a vehicle. Keep purchases sealed and outside the passenger area—ideally in the trunk—while you travel to a place where possession is permitted. Arrange a sober driver, taxi, or rideshare before consuming.

Colorado law stops at key boundaries

Airports, Federal Land, and State Lines

Do not bring cannabis to an airport security checkpoint or onto an aircraft. TSA explains that marijuana remains illegal under federal law and that officers refer suspected violations discovered during screening to law enforcement.

Possession and use are also prohibited on federal property, including national parks and their facilities and campgrounds. That matters on a Colorado trip because a destination can be inside the state and still be governed by federal law.

Do not take cannabis across a state line. Federal law still applies to interstate transport, even when cannabis is legal on both sides of the border. Plan your purchase around what you can lawfully use or leave behind in Colorado.
